Reddit: A Beginner’s Guide

What is Reddit?

Reddit is a social media Web site; users share links, text, images, videos, etc., and then these are voted up or down depending on what the community thinks of them. Users are encouraged to vote on the links and stories that they feel are deserving of being in the top dog spot: it’s kind of a popularity contest, so to speak, and this way the best content bubbles up to the top. This simple beginner’s guide to Reddit will help you get going on one of the most popular sites on the Internet, quickly and easily.

How does Reddit work?

Not only can you use Reddit to share and discover new Web sites, you can also explore the Reddit subnetworks, called sub-Reddits. Basically, these are channels of particular topics such as Science, Programming, and all sorts of other channels. There is a subreddit to fit everyone’s interests, and if you can’t find one that does, you can create one yourself.

Why should I use Reddit?

I tend to use Reddit to find Web sites that are off the beaten path, so to speak – I find that Reddit’s user base has very eclectic tastes and I almost always find something that is well worth a return visit to find even more good stuff.

In addition, I find that I always learn something at Reddit – anything from a day in the life of an emergency response worker, to how to clean permanent markers off of the couch, to gourmet recipes I can make out of stuff in my fridge. It’s a very busy site with a ton of information, well worth a visit.
